What is the weather like on Alonissos Island, Greece?

In the summer season, the Greek islands transform into a magnet that attracts tourists as sun-seekers from across Europe and beyond flock to the Mediterranean to soak up the heat. While Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Corfu and Rhodes may be the most well-known of the islands, Alonissos offers something of a hidden gem that makes for the perfect getaway.

For those looking for a summer adventure with all the benefits of Greece’s rich cultural history, beautiful views, and pristine beaches, Alonissos seemingly ticks all the boxes. While the island may not boast the thriving nightlife scene that the 18-30 demographic craves, it’s the perfect destination for couples and young families seeking a slice of paradise.

During the winter months, the local residents largely occupy the island. Nonetheless, once temperatures rise in the summer, Alonissos comes alive as tourists descend on the island and look to take advantage of the sweltering heat.

Although the picturesque Old Town and delightful small fishing ports are worth exploring, the weather is arguably the primary reason why Alonissos is becoming the worst-kept secret in the Greek tourism industry.

Below is a breakdown of the weather to expect in Alonissos. If you’re considering a visit to the island this summer or fortunate enough to have already booked a ticket, then here is everything you need to know about its tropical climate.

The highest summer temperatures

If getting a tan is your prerogative, then Alonissos is the perfect place to visit during the peak of summer. As is typical across the Mediterranean, the island gets into season once June springs into gear and thousands disembark at the location.

According to the international travel company TUI, the average temperature in June is 23 degrees, and there is a 73 per cent chance of each day being perfectly sunny. Furthermore, the water temperature is 22 degrees, making stepping into the water for a swim the ideal way to spend time.

Despite the scorching heat in June, it becomes even hotter in July, with the highest daily temperatures reaching 30 degrees. The average heat during the summer month is 26 degrees, which increases during August, marking the peak of the Alonissos weather.

While the weather begins to take a sharp downturn in September, it’s still an appropriate time to visit the island. Temperatures average 22 degrees as it returns to a similar heat as June. Therefore, if you want to experience Alonissos at its hottest, July and August are the months to visit.

The winter climate in Alonissos

While Alonissos is full of tourists during the summer months and thriving with life, the same can’t be said in winter. Many of the major hotels close for the season, and instead, the island’s 3,000 local residents inhabit it.

Although it’s still possible to escape to Alonissos during this time of the year, tourists shouldn’t go with the attention of returning home with a fresh coat of tan.

January is the worst month of the year for the weather. On average, it will only be around six degrees, which isn’t significantly different from the United Kingdom and far from the tropical heat of the Caribbean. While the maximum temperature during January is 11 degrees, it can sink as low as two degrees. Although December is slightly warmer, it’s the second coldest month in the calendar year.

Heat seekers should avoid Alonissos from November until it begins to heat up in April. March is the wettest month of the year, with an average of 26mm of rain over a three-day period.
